Following her appearance at IIDEXCanada 2016, Róisín Heneghan, architect and partner of Dublin-based heneghan peng architects is in the news again. Her firm was recently shortlisted as one of the 10 international submissions for the United Kingdom Holocaust Memorial International Design Competition. The memorial will be located largely underground and adjacent to the Palace of Westminster in Victoria Tower Gardens, London. The impetus for the project was a government commission completed in 2015.
The design brief calls for two major components: a stand-alone memorial with landscaping above ground and an underground Learning Centre. The government has already committed £50 million to the total project costs with the hope that additional educational work on the Holocaust will be developed and disseminated at the Learning Centre. The project’s mandate is to specifically relate the relevance of the Holocaust to the United Kingdom.
